CANVASS ACTIVITIES
The official canvass is the process of verifying election results and ensuring every eligible ballot is counted. Canvass activities are open for public observation.Under California law, the canvass generally takes place for six hours per day, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, until completed. Note: Hours may be extended as needed by the Registrar of Voters.
Vote-by-Mail Ballots
Eligible vote-by-mail ballots received within the time allowed by law are processed and included in the election results.
Provisional Ballots
After vote-by-mail and polling place voters have been given credit for voting, provisional ballots are processed. Once a voter has been determined to be eligible and it is verified the voter has not voted elsewhere, their ballot will be counted.
One Percent Manual Tally
A sample of the ballots are selected at random and counted by hand to verify that scanners correctly recorded votes. The manual hand count is compared to the count produced by the voting system scanners to verify they were tabulated correctly.
Precinct Audit
Each voter who casts a ballot at the polling place on Election Day must sign the roster of voters. This audit compares the number of signatures from the polling place roster to the number of ballots cast.
Damaged Ballots
Damaged ballots that cannot be read by the scanner are duplicated and then counted. This damage can be the result of such things as being torn or being stained by food, drinks, etc. California regulations also require ballots to be duplicated under other conditions such as the ballot containing a voter's personal information.
